It shouldn’t be that big of a deal if you have performed regular maintenance and care of your vehicle. However, it can be easy to miss a few minor things that will cause your vehicle to fail inspection — minor things that could easily be avoided!
The Basics:
- Driver’s seat, airbags, seat belts, and doors
- Brakes (including parking brake)
- Headlights and exterior lights (including turn signals and license plate light)
- All four tires, wheels, and rims
- Let’s make sure that horn works!
- Rear-view and side-view mirrors
- Windshield, window glass, windshield wipers, and front/rear defrosters
- The hood latch, engine belts, and all fluids
- Steering and suspension systems
- The fuel and exhaust systems and air pollution controls
Go through the checklist before taking your vehicle for its Virginia State Inspection. Many of the items are things you can take care of easily yourself. This will save you time and money. I mean how many of you have failed simply for your windshield wipers? You have to choose between a higher price or the time spent getting another inspection. Checking beforehand and replacing the wipers is much easier!

8. Verify Fluid Levels: Check and top up engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, and windshield washer fluid levels.

10. Visit a Licensed Inspection Station: Schedule an appointment at a licensed Virginia state inspection station. Be prepared to address any issues found during the inspection to pass successfully.
