But, safety starts before an accident occurs. It is always important to be prepared. Unfortunately, accidents do happen.
Fall is perfect for taking afternoon drives and weekend road trips. The changing leaves and crisp air make Fall the best season for driving. Make sure your car is ready before leaving on your adventure to drive through the Blue Ridge Mountains, watching leaves turn orange, red, and yellow. Check your oil. Check your fluids – do you have plenty of wiper fluid? How’s your tire pressure? When’s the last time you had your brakes checked? These are all part of a basic inspection that many times we overlook before traveling. There’s already so much to do, right? Having your vehicle prepared ahead of time can allow any mishaps that may happen easier on the road.
Basic vehicle inspection is key. But, what should you keep in your car anyways? Don’t forego safety for extra trunk space!
Does your car have a spare tire or is it equipped with a tire sealer (fix-a-flat)? If you have a spare tire, does it have enough air itself? You don’t want to get on the road, pick up a nail, and then not have an adequate spare. Trust us, we’ve seen it happen!
Fall weather also creates changes in tire pressure with the variety of weather. Roanoke residents know this to be true! It can be 80 degrees during the day, and by sun fall the temperature has dropped to 50 degrees or below! Hot weather makes the air in your tires expand. Colder weather makes the air in your tires contract.
Here’s a list of things you’ll want in your car to be prepared for #RoadSafety:
- Spare tire with a tire jack and tire iron (or tire sealer)
- Air Compressor
- Jumper Cables
- Tire Pressure Gauge
- Duct Tape and WD-40 (Check out these crazy duct tape repairs if you are in doubt)

- Collision Center and Car Repair Center information (Remember: Tell your tow, “Go straight to Hannabass and Rowe”)
